Consistent Keyboard Controls in Software

Published by Justin at 10:57 pm under Usability

One of the most common keystrokes used by power users when editing text is CTRL+Backspace. It’s really the most efficient way to delete an entire word.

And editing text is a common task with just about any office-related computer usage, so any time savers have huge ROI for an end user.

Sadly, there is no consistent support for this shortcut across operating systems or even across applications on one OS. And this is just one example of one control; there are dozens more keyboard shortcuts that are supported inconsistently.

This needs to end. No one platform has it right and no one platform has it completely wrong. A blended set of consistent controls needs to coalesce into a standard advocated by some kind of IEEE of keyboard shortcuts industry group and force the software industry in-step.
